Gishwati Field – Seed Potato Production

As we prepare for the Season 2026 A at Gishwati Field, our focus is on setting the foundation for a successful seed potato planting and harvest. A series of well-planned field preparation activities done to ensure optimal soil conditions, proper spacing, and lastly ensure the good access to necessary quality inputs. The following are main activities which are going on;

1. First Tillage (Primary Land Preparation)

The season begins with the first tillage, aimed at breaking up the soil,  improving soil aeration and drainage. This step also facilitates better root penetration for the upcoming crop. Land ploughing is usually done using hoes as it appears in the below pictures.

2. Second Tillage (Secondary Preparation)

After the soil has settled for like 2 weeks, a second tillage is carried out to refine the soil structure. This step ensures a fine tilth that supports effective root development and moisture retention. It also aids in levelling the field for uniform planting.

3. Tracing Planting Lines (Spacing Layout)

To ensure proper spacing between seed potato plants, lines are traced across the field. Recommended spacing (e.g., 75 cm between rows and 30 cm between plants) is used to promote healthy growth, reduce disease spread, and facilitate weeding and harvesting. Spacing varies depending on the purpose for  which you’re planting seeds, if you want to plant for the purpose of getting seed potatoes you use small spacing, while for large consumption potatoes use large spacing. Depending on the given recommendation.  we plant 45000 pieces of minitubers per 1 hectare.

4. Fertilizer purchasing and transportation to the field

Both organic and inorganic fertilizers are purchased in advance. Organic manure is sourced locally to enhance soil fertility and structure, inorganic fertilizers (NPK-17-17-17) are also purchased in the local Agro-dealer and applied  based on soil test results. All fertilizers are transported to the field prior to sowing.

5. Purchase of Minitubers Seeds

Good-quality certified minitubers seeds are purchased from EGSP- out growers (greenhouse  owners). These disease-free Minitubers are essential for seed potato multiplication and yield quality assurance. The seeds are transported carefully to the field, with attention to handling and storage to avoid sprout damage.

Conclusion
Each of these preparatory steps is vital for achieving high productivity and seed quality during Season 2026 A. Timely and coordinated implementation ensures that Gishwati Field is well-prepared for successful seed potato planting and development.
