  • Training Greenhouse Owners on Sand-ponic Systems for Improved Seed Potato Production

On 11 and 12 December 2025, EGSP-IMBUTO, in collaboration with COMESA, organized a practical training for EGSP-IMBUTO out growers / greenhouse owners. The training aimed to strengthen seed potato production by introducing the use of sand-ponic systems in greenhouses as an alternative to soil based production, with the goal of increasing yields while keeping investment costs manageable.

The main focus of the training was on understanding and applying the sand-ponic system. Participants were guided through the full process, starting with the selection and preparation of clean sand from non contaminated sources.

Emphasis was placed on proper sand disinfection using sodium hypochlorite to eliminate pests and diseases, followed by correct rinsing and handling to avoid re contamination. Trainers explained the materials required for sand-ponic production, including tanks, piping, pots or beds, and simple gravity fed irrigation systems that do not require electricity.

Detailed sessions were conducted on nutrient management, highlighting that sand contains no nutrients and therefore requires precise preparation and mixing of nutrient solutions using regular fertilizers. Participants learned how correct nutrient balance supports healthy vine growth and improves minituber production. Greenhouse hygiene, sanitation rules, and crop management practices were also emphasized as critical for protecting disease free planting material.

In addition to the technical sand-ponic training, participants received basic guidance on investment calculation and business planning in agriculture. This session helped greenhouse owners understand production costs, plan inputs, and make informed decisions to improve profitability and sustainability of their operations.

The Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) contributed by training participants on rapid seed multiplication, with a particular focus on access to and use of vitroplants as a reliable source of clean planting material.

Finally, the Rwanda Inspectorate, Competition and Consumer Protection Authority (RICA) provided guidance on regulatory requirements, explaining the procedures, standards, and documentation needed for seed production, certification, and compliance.

Overall, the training equipped greenhouse owners with practical skills and knowledge to adopt sand-ponic systems, improve seed potato productivity, and operate within both sound business and regulatory frameworks.
