Rwanda continues to increase its potato production. This growth is evidenced by the ongoing expansion of the potato cultivating area, the proportionate rise in market consumption, and the development of new varieties by the Rwanda Agricultural Board (RAB).
Some new varieties developed have shown the desirable traits such as high yield potantial, tolerance to biotic stress such as late blight and bacterial wilt. These include Ndeze, Nkunganire, Izihirwe, Kazeneza, and Twihaze.
Other new varieties such as Jyambere, Cyerekezo, Gisubizo, Ndamira, Twigire and Seka have various qualities that end consumers prefer such as high yield, high dry matter content and processing qualities.
For the sake of the potato industry’s sustainability and to give farmers additional options, RAB’s efforts to create new varieties were essential.
